Pillars Mudéjares

Cartaya

These constructions are part of a complex installation of water collection and conduction of the XV and XVI centuries. There are two that can currently be visited, the Pilar de Mogaya and the Pilar de la Dehesa which, together with a third party that disappeared, the Pilar de la Mezquita, were traditionally places for supplying the Cartaya population and cattle for freshness and healthiness of its waters.

They consist of a fountain or trough formed by two rectangular structures joined, covered with vaults and with some small openings in their faces to facilitate the extraction of water or its reach by the animals. The original buildings had only one structure in each pillar. Later a second structure was added to form the pillar that we can observe in the photo.

It is located in a cultivated area of cereals and orange trees, crossed by a stream that provided water to the trough. The central one is that of Mogaya, on the banks of the Cañada de Mogaya, near Km. 13 of the old road, now disappeared. As for the Pilar de la Dehesa, the westernmost, it is located next to the Pilar road, about 1500 meters from the beginning of this road from the Cartaya-Tariquejo highway.
