Parish Church of San Pedro

Cartaya

The current building began to be built in 1575 and the process was completed in 1606. It is located in Plaza Redonda, the center of the municipality, and measures 42 x 19 m. It is one of the best illustrative exponents of Renaissance churches in Western Andalusia.

The whole construction, basically Renaissance concept, consists of three naves and flat head, made with Mudejar materials. The building fits within the simplifying artistic reaction against the decorative richness of the previous era.

Its tower-facade stands out, since there are very few churches that host one of the entrances to the temple in its lower part. This was formerly the gateway to the church, the only Mudejar style. Said access in the back part of the urban nucleus, another entrance oriented towards the Redonda Square was enabled.

In the second half of the seventeenth century three chapels were added to the nave of the Gospel and in the eighteenth century the current sacristy and portal were built. Finally, in the 19th century, the archives and rectoral house were added.

In July 1936, the church suffered the looting and destruction of its altarpieces, images and equipment, and was totally dismantled. The tasks of reconstruction of the building began after the Spanish Civil War, completely renewing its interior.

To equip the temple and animate the bare walls, the Seville Museum was requested to transfer some paintings. Among them, there is a collection of scenes from the life of San Francisco de Asís from the 18th century, from the great Franciscan painter Juan Ruiz Soriano. As for the oldest sculptures highlights "The Christ of the Seven Words" of the eighteenth century.

Currently, this building is kept in good condition since in the mid-90s it proceeded to the restoration of the elements that were in poor condition, such as the roof and the floor, as well as the pair and knuckle armor of the nave. central.
