Lighthouses of El Rompido

El Rompido

The lighthouses are located in the coastal core of El Rompido with views of the town and the Natural Site of the Marismas del Río Piedras and Flecha de El Rompido.

The old lighthouse was built in 1861 on the project of Angel Mayo and came to mark the mouth of the Piedras River at the height of the arrow where the Punta del Gato was located.

With a truncated cone shape and a decagonal lantern, it has a height of 13 meters and a lighting range of 16 miles. As of 1930 and due to the greater reach that the Mazagón lighthouse is acquiring, it is losing importance, so its lighting is replaced by a permanent one of acetylene. The old lighthouse stops working in 1976 when the new one begins to operate.

This lighthouse is managed directly by the City of Cartaya. Its conservation status is quite good, although in recent years it has lost one of the most important elements such as the lens.

The new lighthouse obeys to that, given the situation, a lighthouse of greater height was needed, 31 meters, that allowed to complete the navigation arch from Ayamonte to Huelva. Its reach is 24 miles and is cylindrical and reinforced concrete. Said lighthouse, is managed by the Port Authority of Huelva.
