Castle of San Miguel de Arca de Buey

Of the castle it is only known that it was destroyed by the Dutch pirates in the sixteenth century. It had the shape of a square about thirty meters on each side and an interior surface of approximately 750 m2.

It was made based on stone blocks of different types from larger blocks of Islamic wall. It was accessed from the wall of the west flank and in its interior the rooms and spaces of diverse uses were distributed.

Its main function, apart from the defense of the inhabitants of the coastal town, was to control the passage of the estuary of the Ría del Piedras.

Its remains are considered of Cultural Interest in the category of monuments. They are located in the parcel called Hacienda de San Miguel, which is located on the eastern margin of the mouth of the Piedras River, in the coastal core of El Rompido.

Currently, the remains of the castle, along with other archaeological remains important for its history, are placed in value forming part of the Hotel Complex Fuerte de El Rompido. The Castle is located next to the hotel entrance and golf course. It is also exposed to a furnace of modern times so that it can be observed and, in the hillside of this place there are remains of the town conditioned as a path and indicated through informative plaques.
